From an overchallenged Greek die cutter
Lot 803
CILICIA. Ninica-Claudiopolis. Maximinus I, 235-238. Pentassarion (?) (Orichalcum, 32 mm, 16.20 g). C IUL UЄΠ MAXIMVΓ CAЄГ (sic!) Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Maximinus I to right; five countermarks: Victory (3), star, and Δ in circle. Rev. COL NINIC CL/AVΔ (sic!) She-wolf standing right under tree, suckling the twins. SNG Levante -. SNG Paris -. SNG PFPS 981. For countermarks, Howgego 262, 451 and 669. Rare and interesting, with a pleasant light green patina. Very fine.

This is a curious coin in that the Greek die cutter both struggled with the Latin language as well as with the similarity between the names of Maximinus I and Maximus: while the legend names the son, the portrait clearly shows the laureate and bearded father
